The following list of highest mountains is not definite and not necessarily accurate, as there are several inconsistencies with the peak height between different sources. To further complicate making a definite list, it is not always clear what exactly constitutes a mountain, i.e. when a mountain is actually a separate mountain and when it is merely a subsidiary summit of another higher peak.

Most common and probably the most sensible way of determining what constitutes a mountain is to use topographic prominence, that is to say the altitude above the highest col connecting the peak to its nearest higher sibling. Highly independent peaks are called ultras.

Some people even go as far as to hold prominence as truer measure of mountain height than its actual altitude. From the climber's point of view at least, that's nonsensical. Since both Everest and Lhotse are climbed from the very same base camp, it makes absolutely no sense whatsoever to think Everest as 8850m peak and Lhotse as 610m peak while in real the altitude difference starting from regular climb starting point is 349m. Furthermore, the amount of oxygen is a function of actual altitude, not on prominence.

This "local relief", for a lack of a better term, a altitude difference between base of a mountain and its summit affects greatly the difficulty of scaling the peak. However, the local relief is not proper measure of mountain height either, as altitude plays a great role. Furthermore, it is very vague and varies between different sides of the mountain.

Worlds highest mountains

Generally the prominence cutoff of 500m has been used to only list independent mountains. However, few peaks with lesser prominence in included in the list.
