- In 1978 Mark Vallance founded Wild Country to manufacture 'Friends', a revolutionary rock climbing anchor. Within six months he was selling them to fifteen countries worldwide. 'Rocks' and other products followed and in 1982 Wild Country began to manufacture tents. Both tents and climbing hardware grew, as did the problems of running a small business, to the extent that in 1992 it was decided to separate tents from the core business. In 1996 he sold Wild Country and subsequently the new owners sold the name 'Wild Country' (for use on tents only), to another company. Wild Country's disassociation from tents presented Vallance with the opportunity to return to tent manufacture.
